EXP3: SUBMISSION

ARCH1101
EXP3 SUBMISSION:
THE BRIDGE

 CONCEPT
Winston Churchill once said,
"WE SHAPE OUR BUILDINGS AND THEY SHAPE US",
a powerful statement that has withstood the test of time, resonating within the subconscious of designers and architects alike. Hence, Architecture has become an expression of values and emotions, subtly offering each and every individual a quintessential insight into the human psyche. With the rapid sophistication of technology, it can be easy to forget how the manifestation of simple design elements such as monumental atrium heights and peaks, geometric skylights and voluminous hallways can conjure a myriad of emotions and feelings within the individual experiencing and enveloped in the environment. Colours can also enhance the lucidity of the final design solution, echoing and solidifying the values, expressions and emotions the building was designed to make us feel. When intertwined, these two elements ultimately accentuate and heighten the effect of one another to present a cohesive environment that superlatively responds to its spatial requirements and functional criteria. It can then be said that,
"THE WAY WE BUILD IS A REFLECTION OF THE WAY WE LIVE".

FOREWORD
The Bridge:
A monumental structure culminating from a myriad of design features that exert long-lasting and heartfelt effects upon the occupants.
A design that revolves around the knowledge and understanding of the human psyche to ultimately unlock our potential and spearhead our imagination.

From the ground plane the bridge dominates the environment, the rigid timber facades that weaves in and out reinforce the immensity of the structure that appears to naturally stem from the ground whilst the pristine white facades that glisten under the blazing sun hark back to the powerful Gothic structures.
On a functional basis, the strategic positioning of glass facades and skylights provides maximum solar access and lighting for all corners of the structure. On a metaphysical level, these glass panels blurs the boundaries between the built and natural environment, symbolically reminding us to constantly challenge the boundaries and limitations of the mind.
EXPLOSIVE                    FLUIDITY                          LINEAR
Explosive: The centralized lecture hall is the junction of the split level landings, each leading to a different functional space within the first level. The presence of the blue ceiling produces a calming effect, drawing out confidence and intelligence from the occupants of the lecture hall. The expansive main hallway adds to the structure's breathtaking and awe-inspiring characteristics that simply arouses the mind to sublimity.
Fluidity: Although the split level layout creates a series of landings that differs in height and width, there remains a free flowing and uninterrupted movement between the spaces. The subtle orange walls evoke a sense of enthusiasm, determination and encouragement, extremely fitting for student study rooms whilst the rippling red facades lift the atmosphere with its powerful and energetic vibe.
Linear: The only access to the second floor from within the structure is through the cantilevering staircases that flank the lecture hall. Although these stairs do link up with several of the split level landings, the movement is primarily upwards in a linear fashion. The narrow hallways incites a sense of intimacy and familiarity which deepens the occupants connection to the structure. Here the vibrant yellow facades of the computer labs produces a warming effect, stimulating mental activity and happiness within the occupants.
